An independent survey of water utility companies across the United States and Canada has concluded that the cost of operations and maintenance (O&M) for concrete pressure pipe are low.

The study was performed by AWP Research, a Virginia firm specializing in product and market research. The results demonstrated that the average cost of O&M per mile for the period 1991 to 1995 was $158 for all concrete pressure pipe.

AWP distributed its questionnaire to a sample of 110 utilities. A total of 47 responses were received and tabulated. Respondents' job titles were usually in a management role such as director of operations, chief engineer or general manager. Service population was evenly split between over and under 250,000 people.

Concrete pressure pipe represented 34 percent of installed pipe, with ductile iron pipe at 28 percent, and cast iron pipe at 32 percent. Approximately 3.4 percent of the installed pipe was steel, with another 2.2 comprised of PVC.
