Voith Hydro Receives Order For Sikkim's Rongnichu Hydro Electric Project
Voith Hydro Private Limited, a group company of Germany-based industrial equipment major Voith AG, said on 28.09.2011 that it has received an order from Madhya Bharat Power Corporation Limited to supply complete plant.
Voith Hydro Private Limited, a group company of Germany-based industrial equipment major Voith AG, said on 28.09.2011 that it has received an order from Madhya Bharat Power Corporation Limited to supply complete plant equipment for Sikkim's Rongnichu Hydro-Electric Project. Voith Hydro will supply turbines, generators and electrical and mechanical auxiliaries for the plant. The company was awarded the order in September 2011, the company stated. With the Commissioning of the project, an additional 96 MW of clean energy will be available to the National Grid.
Madhya Bharat Power Corporation Limited is implementing the Rongnichu Hydro Electric Project, a run-of-the-river scheme on the river Rongnichu near Gangtok in eastern Sikkim, a state in the north-eastern region of India. Run-of-the-river hydro power plants require considerably smaller water storage, and at times no water storage at all, and does not obstruct the natural flow of the river. Madhya Bharat Power Corporation Limited is a group company of Sarda Energy and Minerals Limited, one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of ferrous alloys in India.
"India has a large and unutilised hydropower potential and the development of such hydro-electric projects like Rongnichu is expected to strengthen the country's push to become self-reliant to meet the power and energy needs of an expanding economy. The energy generated by the plant will be available to the national grid," said Mr. Amresh Dhawan, MD, Voith Hydro Pvt. Ltd.
The announcement by Voith is significant in the context of expanding bilateral economic and trade ties between India and Germany. Both countries are currently celebrating ‘Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities', a 15-month programme series to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Germany and India. The series will showcase Indo-German collaborations in the field of politics, business, culture, sports, education, science, technology and research. Featured prominently will be issues like mobility, energy, sustainable city development, architecture, cultural spaces, urban art and education. Voith participates in this series as a city partner in Kolkata, Hyderabad and New Delhi.
Voith will execute a state of the art two-bearing Pelton Turbine arrangement for the Rongnichu project. Two Pelton Turbines of 48 MW each will be installed to generate power from the project. The Pelton runners for Rongnichu will be delivered from Voith's manufacturing facility at Vadodara, India.
