The Generac® Gemini® Twin Pack Genset Produces 1 Megawatt Of Standby Power

Waukesha, WI – The new Gemini Twin Pack genset from Generac Power Systems, Inc., Waukesha, WI., offers a space-saving, redundant design that produces 1,000 kilowatts (kW) (or 1 megawatt (mW)) of power, making it ideal for a variety of applications, including hospitals, airports, office buildings, manufacturing plants, data centers and retail superstores, according to Paul Bowers, vice president, industrial sales, Generac.

Using Generac's onboard paralleling technology, the Gemini's power is produced by two 500 kW gensets operating within a single, sound attenuated enclosure. Each genset is powered by a pair of Volvo 16-liter, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-compliant diesel engines, each one powering a 500 kW alternator at 1,800 rotations per minute (RPM). "These very powerful and reliable heavy-duty industrial engines are ideal for power generation," says Bowers. "They're mounted side by side within the Gemini enclosure to optimize airflow, which is critical in standby generators."

In addition, Generac's industry-exclusive design has important advantages. Because the side by side generators operate in parallel, Gemini offers built-in redundancy for increased reliability. "During normal operation, the electrical load is shared proportionately by both generators," explains Bowers. "If for some reason one is not operating, the other can provide up to 500 kW of power."

The Gemini Twin Pack is designed as a superior approach for large, mission-critical generators. Its high output and compact footprint (171 square feet) give Gemini the highest power density (kW per square foot) available for a backup system. Because of its condensed design, the Gemini Twin Pack requires less space than any of its competitors.

Gemini gensets are part of Generac's industry-exclusive Modular Power System (MPS), a flexible and expandable solution that offers scalability and redundancy with superior reliability. This innovative power solution features integrated digital controls for paralleling and load sharing and eliminates the need for expensive switchgear. The PowerManager System Controller is a fully integrated controller that acts as the single point of system communications. The heart of the MPS, the PowerManager features load shedding control and the GenLink interface software. As facilities expand and power needs grow, MPS allows additional gensets to be added to meet increased requirements and achieve n + 1 (need plus one) redundancy for critical loads. As many as seven Gemini units can be combined and paralleled for applications requiring up to 7 mW.

Additionally, Generac's vertical integration means that the Gemini's key components are Generac-designed and built, including the digital controls, onboard paralleling system, sound attenuated enclosure and sub-base fuel tank. All Gemini gensets are UL 2200 Listed by Underwriters Laboratory for safety and verification of rated power output.
