S&S Energy Offers Water Treatment for LM6000 Turbine Gen Sets

S&S Energy Products now offers standardized, modular E-CELL electrodeionization systems for LM6000 gas turbine-generator sets. The E-CELL-based water treatment systems supply high purity water for NOx suppression and SPRINT spray intercooling operation for this gas turbine.

Drake Water Systems, a GE Glegg Water Technologies business that specializes in standardized systems, plans to supply the E-CELL-based systems.

"The E-CELL-based systems combines the packaging expertise of S&S Energy Products with the water treatment systems competency of GE Glegg," said Jack Patton, general manager of Packaging/Balance of Plant for S&S Energy Products. "Customers are offered value through a reliable, cost-effective system that provides water consistent with quality requirements for LM6000 gas turbine-generator sets. In addition, this packaged water treatment system reduces field installation time from weeks to days."

The E-CELL-based water treatment systems provide a dependable alternative to rental water treatment systems and to traditional anion/cation water treatment systems. Unlike the anion/cation-based systems, E-CELL-based systems do not require hazardous regeneration chemicals and can be operated on a continuous basis.

These systems, he said, operate with constant, moderately hard, low iron water supplies, which are common for municipally treated water sources. Several options are provided in the event that the raw water quality necessitates additional pre-treatment.

These standard systems incorporate multi-media filtration, reverse osmosis, and E-CELL electrodeionization. S&S Energy Products offers four basic designs: 75 gallons per minute (gpm), 150 gpm, 250 gpm and a 400-gpm system. These four designs, Patton said will be sufficient for power plants ranging from one to six LM6000 gas turbine-generator sets. These systems are packaged in a modular container to minimize field installation work.

Included with the water treatment equipment module is a complete set of instrumentation and automatic valves. This enables automated operation of the water treatment system via the main plant control system, consisting of a single comprehensive, programmable logic controller with an operator interface and a programmable laptop computer included.

Advantages of the modularized E-CELL-based water treatment systems include:

  • Lower Installed Cost: Standardization of these modules allows reduction in engineering hours and minimizes on-site labor and equipment. The pre-packaged concept is a direct result of S&S Energy Products "fast track" philosophy and experience, which allows for the best opportunity to reduce dollars per kW.

  • Easy Installation and Start-Up: The E-CELL-based systems are based on years of design and operating experience, using the most reliable and cost effective components and assembly techniques. The pre-piped designs are complete with all necessary isolation valves and test taps integrated within the skid boundaries for ease of installation. All systems are pre-tested by S&S Energy Products at its factory prior to shipment to ensure that start-up is both fast and simple. Only tie point connections are required before beginning high quality water production.

  • Efficient, Compact Design: Both the E-CELL and reverse osmosis modules feature a small footprint design, to minimize valuable floor space. Particular attention is paid so the operator has easy access to the controls and indicators mounted on the unit, thereby making these systems extremely easy to operate.

  • Superb Water Quality: The multimedia filter, reverse osmosis and the E-CELL have been optimized to provide a robust water treatment system designed to meet the specific requirements of the LM6000. The E-CELL modules offer efficient water polishing operation within a compact design framework, and continuous service using electricity instead of hazardous chemicals to regenerate the resin bed.

"S&S Energy Products remains a world leader in gas turbine packaging. To date, there are more than 300 GE LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine packages supplied by S&S Energy Products worldwide," Patton said.

E-CELL-based water treatment systems are available as a retrofit for all LM6000 gas turbine-generator sets, and are offered by S&S Energy Products on new LM6000 gas turbine generator sets. Drake Water Systems at its Guelph, Ontario, Canada facility manufactures the E-CELL-based water treatment systems.

In 1999, GE Power Systems acquired Glegg Industries. GE Glegg Water Technologies designs, manufactures and installs water purification systems for industrial clients worldwide. The company has become a leader in its field by developing innovative, environmentally sound technology. GE Glegg also reliably delivers cost-effective solutions to its customers and offers products and services that meet the full-range of clients' industrial water needs, including build-own-operate-maintain options.
