Siemens Westinghouse Will Construct a New Power Plant for AES Ironwood

Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation will supply a power plant on a turnkey basis for AES Ironwood, Inc., a subsidiary of the AES Corporation. The equipment procurement and construction contract, which is valued at more than $280 million, includes an eight-year maintenance agreement.

The 700-megawatt AES Ironwood project, which will be located in Lebanon, PA, will be powered by two 235-megawatt W501G combustion turbines and a 230-megawatt steam turbine-generator. Siemens Westinghouse will supply the combustion and steam turbine-generators and procure the remaining balance-of-plant equipment. The plant's primary fuel will be natural gas with dual fuel capability to burn distillate oil. Plant construction will begin in early 1999 with commercial operation scheduled for the first quarter 2001. The plant will be owned and operated by AES Ironwood Inc.

The W501G, a highly efficient 60-Hz combustion turbine, incorporates the traditional design elements of the successful W501series including a two-bearing rotor, axial exhaust, cold-end drive, individual combustors and other time-proven features. It incorporates the latest in dry low NOx emission combustion technologies to meet emission limits without water or steam injection when firing natural gas. Siemens Westinghouse now has orders for six W501G combustion turbines. The first W501G will enter commercial operation in Summer, 1999 at Lakeland Electric in Lakeland, FL.
