Siemens And Marubeni Hand Over Wang Noi 4 Power Plant To EGAT

A consortium comprising of Siemens AG, Siemens Ltd. Thailand and the Japanese partner Marubeni has completed the Wang Noi 4 combined cycle power plant in Thailand on schedule. The Owner, the state-owned utility Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), took the power plant into commercial operation on April 7, 2014. The natural gas fired power plant features an efficiency of over 57.3 % with an electrical capacity of 770 megawatts (MW). This makes Wang Noi 4 one of the most modern power plants in Thailand and currently in all of South East Asia in terms of environmental compatibility and efficiency.

The multi-shaft unit Wang Noi 4 is located in the vicinity of the Thai capital Bangkok, and is an extension of a power plant complex that is already home to three units. For unit 4, Siemens supplied the main components, comprising two model SGT5-4000F gas turbines, an SST5-5000 steam turbine, three SGen-1000A generators, and the SPPA-T3000 instrumentation & control system. Siemens was also in charge of commissioning of Unit 4. Marubeni supplied the heat recovery steam generators, the main transformers and the cooling tower. Siemens' partner in the consortium was also responsible for the civil works and erection of the plant.

"Wang Noi 4 features high efficiency, short start-up times and the ability to handle fast load changes," states Lothar Balling, head of global power plant project management at Siemens Energy Power Generation Division. "We are pleased to note that, by applying our Zero Harm initiative in close cooperation with our partner and our customer, we have set new standards in industrial safety, too. In all, over 8 million hours were worked without a single lost time accident."

"We are glad that, thanks to the experience of Siemens and Marubeni in the construction of EPC power plants, we were able to take over the power plant on original schedule, despite complications due to the flooding disaster in October / November 2011. This new plant will help us to ensure a reliable power supply for the Bangkok metropolitan region," said EGAT's Khun Ratanachai Namwong, Deputy Governor, Power Plant Development.

Following Wang Noi 4, the Siemens and Marubeni consortium will be completing Chana 2 CCPP, a further two single-shaft unit in the summer of 2014. Power plants with Siemens turbine generator sets, including Chon Buri IPT, Chana 1 (previously known as Songkhla), Bang Pakong 5, and Glow are making a major contribution to environmentally friendly power generation in Thailand.
