Reliant Energy Receives Approval for Florida Plant
"Reliant Energy Osceola is a key part of our Florida strategy to selectively develop power generation capacity to meet growing demand for electricity," said Doug Divine, senior vice president of generation development for Reliant Energy Wholesale Group. "This plant will augment and complement area growth while providing power to the local grid at times of peak demand for electricity."
The Reliant Energy Osceola project will provide Osceola County with more than $1.5 million in annual tax revenues and produce a $10.9 million economic impact from the construction of the facility. Construction starts in May, with estimated completion in 18 months.
Reliant Energy Osceola will be located about 20 miles southeast of Orlando. The site is strategically located near existing electric transmission lines and an underground natural gas pipeline. The project consists of three, simple-cycle gas turbines. While the plant will primarily use natural gas for fuel, it will also be able to produce electricity from No. 2 fuel oil.
Reliant Energy, based in Houston, TX, has more than 22,000 MW of power generation in operation in the United States and Western Europe and has announced acquisitions and development projects that will add another 8,300 MW.
In 1999, domestic wholesale electricity trading volumes totaled about 112 million MWh. Daily natural gas trading volumes totaled 7 billion cubic feet. Reliant Energy maintains an office in Miami to serve the long-term energy needs of customers in the Florida Reliability Coordinating Council and the Southeastern Electric Reliability Council power markets.
The Miami office originates deals and tailors energy products and services for Reliant Energy customers in the southeastern United States. For more information about Reliant Energy's Florida operations, call Mike Antonell, marketing director, Reliant Energy Wholesale Group, (305) 387-9099.
