PB selected as consultant for Kuwaiti power projects

Parsons Brinckerhoff International (PB), an engineering, planning and construction management organization, has been awarded a contract to provide consulting engineering services for the development of new power stations in Kuwait.

This major program is being carried out by the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) of the Government of Kuwait to significantly increase power generation capacity in the country.

The new facilities entail a 2500 MW steam turbine station at Az-zour North which will be located adjacent to the existing Az-zour South Power Station, about 100 kilometers south of Kuwait City, and an approximately 1000 MW gas-fired plant located on two sites, Shuaiba and Sabiya.

PB will assist in determining the most suitable power unit capacities for the facilities, prepare specifications and tender documents, and carry out tender analysis, culminating in the supervision of the construction works on site.

Tom O'Neill, President and Chief Executive Officer of Parsons Brinckerhoff Inc., said the contract award "demonstrates the Ministry's recognition of our extensive experience in the Middle East and with the technologies involved in these facilities, covering both conventional thermal power plant and open cycle gas turbines."

Joel Bennett, Chairman and President of PB International as well as Chairman of PB Power, commented: "We are delighted to continue our long association with the Ministry of Electricity and Water, and are fully committed to supporting their objectives in maintaining a robust and reliable power supply in line with Kuwait's growing needs."

With the award of these new projects in Kuwait, PB has performed engineering services for several of the biggest recent power plants in the Middle East.

The firm was owner's engineer for the 2400 MW Sabiya Power Station in Kuwait, completed in August 2000. PB is also currently providing engineering consultancy services for the first stage of the Shoaiba power plant in Saudi Arabia and has provided services for the 2400 MW Ghazlan II power station in Saudi Arabia and the 390 MW extension to Aqaba power station in Jordan.

Founded in New York in 1885, Parsons Brinckerhoff provides multidisciplinary services for power, transportation, buildings, environmental and telecommunications projects. The firm employs over 9,100 professionals and support staff in more than 250 offices worldwide.
