Ontario Power Generation Inc. Uses Eco-Tec, Inc. For New High-purity Water Treatment System
Ontario Power Generation Inc. is one of the world's largest power producers with approximately 31,000 MW of installed production capacity from 80 nuclear, fossil and hydroelectric generating stations. The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station is built around 8 CANDU (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) reactor units producing approximately 4,100 MW of electricity.
OPGI's selection of NIO's offer featuring Eco-Tec's equipment and services is based on Eco-Tec's proven track record of providing reliable high-purity water treatment systems, the ability to successfully operate and maintain the treatment system and the operating savings obtained from its advanced Recoflo® Demineralization Systems. According to Stan Vajdic, Project Development Manager of NIO, "We are pleased to have partnered with Eco-Tec for this outsourcing opportunity. The selection of Eco-Tec for this project demonstrates NIO's commitment to select the best technology and application of best industry practices to meet the customer's needs. We feel OPGI will be extremely satisfied with the outsourcing performance of NIO and Eco-Tec over the 10 year contract period."
The water treatment system will be capable of producing a net product flow of 1,050 USgpm (240 m3/h) of ultra-pure demineralized water, exceeding the quality parameter guidelines set by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). A dramatic reduction in waste and chemical use will also be realized. Raw water, originating from Lake Ontario, will be drawn from the Condenser Cooling Water (CCW) discharge ducts and pre-treated by screening, stringent filtration using Eco-Tec's Spectrum Media Filters, ultraviolet disinfection and reverse osmosis. The pre-treated water will be further polished by Eco-Tec's Recoflo demineralization systems and mixed bed ion exchange units to provide a water product resistivity of at least 16.7 megohm.cm (equivalent to a conductivity of 0.06 µS/cm) with no more than 0.2 ppb sodium, 2 ppb total silica and 10 ppb total organic carbon.
All the equipment will be manufactured at Eco-Tec's facility in Pickering, Ontario. Commissioning of the system will be completed in May, 2001.
Incorporated in 1970, Eco-Tec is a global leader in the supply of high-purity water treatment and chemical recovery systems based on its proprietary Recoflo ion exchange and resin sorption processes. Eco-Tec is registered under ISO 9001.
