NRG Energy Buys Two Niagara Mohawk Coal-Fired Plants

NRG Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Northern States Power, announced today the execution of an asset sales agreement with Niagara Mohawk Power to purchase two coal-fired plants, Dunkirk Station and Huntley Station. The two plants feature an aggregate summer rating of 1,360 MW. The acquisition, which is still subject to state and federal approvals, is expected to close in the second quarter of next year. NRG will hold a 100% interest in each of the units and will own, operate, and maintain the facilities.

Dunkirk Station, a four-unit, 600-MW plant, is located 55 miles southwest of Buffalo, NY. Huntley Station, located three miles north of Buffalo, is Niagara Mohawk's largest coal-fired plant. The plant is comprised of six units with a total nominal rating of 760 MW. NRG is currently involved in approximately 13,000 MW of projects utilizing diverse fuel types including natural and landfill gas, hydro, and solid fuels such as coal, lignite, biomass and refuse-derived fuel.

According to NRG North America, president and CEO Craig Mataczynski: "the Niagara Mohawk facilities, when combined with our Somerset acquisition in Massachusetts a few months ago, provide NRG with a solid base of low-cost assets in the Northeast region that we can use to expand our presence and increase shareholder value. We expect to receive regulatory approval on a timely basis and expect to close and assume operations of these facilities in the second quarter."
