ABB's new Navigator 600 Silica analyzer substantially reduces the amount of reagents and maintenance generally associated with silica analysis, while providing accurate and reliable silica monitoring.

The first in the new Navigator 600 series of chemical analyzers from ABB, the Navigator 600 Silica uses one-fourth the reagents consumed by units from other manufacturers, greatly reducing annual costs. Additionally, capabilities for remote management and automatic calibration and cleaning allow three months of unattended operation, significantly reducing maintenance.

Designed for the power generation industry and other large-scale steam and water dependent industrial applications, the Navigator 600 Silica provides accurate monitoring of a wide range of silica concentrations (0 and 5000 ppb). It is available in single or multi-stream configurations, enabling up to 6 streams to be monitored sequentially, and can be configured for either continuous or sampled measurements. The unit provides current loop, ethernet and optional Profibus DP V1 outputs.

"We put tremendous focus on cost of operation and maintenance with the Navigator 600 Silica," says Blake Doney, ABB's VP of Analytical and Flow Instrumentation. "For example, the Navigator 600 Silica annual maintenance to the pump tubing and capstan can be done in just two to three minutes, compared to 45 minutes required on some units," adds Doney.

The Navigator 600 Silica features twice as many diagnostic messages as other units, making it much easier to identify potential problems remotely. Reagent bottle sensors alert operators to low reagent levels and an automatic cleaning function, which can be set to clean the whole wet section periodically, prevents problems with drift due to fouled tubes, chemical and optical systems. "The bottom line," concludes Doney, "is that unscheduled downtime is dramatically reduced by a set of very sophisticated and comprehensive on-board diagnostics and predictive maintenance functions."

From the operations perspective, a key benefit of the Navigator 600 Silica is its ease of use. As Bob Hausler, ABB Instrumentation VP of Marketing, points out, "As with all of our new products, the Navigator 600 Silica employs the new ABB Universal HMI, with front-mounted pushbuttons providing advanced - yet simple - device interaction and navigation. Operation and commissioning is straightforward, with context driven menus and softkeys for setting and fine-tuning parameters." The extensive built-in on-line help system provides additional support.

"One of ABB's key initiatives is delivering a consistent and intuitive human-machine experience, which reduces maintenance and training costs" says Hausler. "This is the drive behind our ABB Universal HMI, and because of the sophistication of the device, the Navigator 600 Silica goes a step further and shares platform technology with ABB's advanced ScreenMaster data recorders." The Navigator 600 offers a choice of data display formats, including chart, bar graph, and digital indicator views. Historical logs provide operators with access to alarm, totalizer, and audit trail data. Process data and historical logs are securely archived to a removable SD card with capacity of up to 2 GB.

The Navigator 600 Silica also includes a built in ethernet communications link with an onboard web and ftp servers, enabling remote monitoring, configuration selection, data and log file access to the analyzer from a web browser.
