Major Upgrades Win Harris Pye New Business
Investment of over $1.2m in finning machine extensions and upgrades at their manufacturing plant in Singapore has led to virtually instant new orders, and to the Harris Pye Group being able to serve new markets across the power, oil and gas, petrochemical and marine industries; as well as being able to respond quickly to emergency failures of exhaust gas boilers and economisers.
Within days of completing the extensions and upgrades to their finning machines the Group won an order from a major international power plant provider for a unit made from 63.5mm tube in specialist CrMo Alloy and for a high performance tight pitch gas fired superheater over 10m long, neither of which would have been possible to produce prior to the upgrading.
"This certainly proved our major investment in the finn machine extension and upgrade to enable long serrated tube to be produced highly worthwhile," says John Kinman, Managing Director of Harris Pye Singapore Pte Ltd. "We were able to produce both items on fast track delivery in six weeks from receipt of the confirmed order. Other orders have been arriving ever since the new equipment was installed and are already in the works and coming through.
"Power providers around the world are eager to take advantage of our HP Economiser range designed to recover waste heat contained within boiler exhaust gases and transfer as much of this energy as is practically possible to the incoming boiler feed water stream by pre-heating it prior to its entry into the boiler, not only to ensure their ‘green' credentials, but also providing ongoing savings through significant reductions in spiralling fuel bills and added possibilities of carbon credit trading.
The HP Economiser high efficiency heat exchanger design and construction lends itself suitable for installation into most boiler exhaust gas outlet ducts. HP high efficiency tube banks are purpose designed units constructed from selected finned steel tubing manufactured on Harris Pye's own specialised in-house ‘Spiral' and ‘H' type tube finning machines.
The state-of-the-art spiral finning machine was upgraded to enable production in terms of length from 8m to 13m; OD tube from 19mm to 125mm; and finn type from solid to serrated. These upgrades enable ‘Frame 6 HRSG' serrated and solid tubes to be produced in-house for the first time. Harris Pye in Singapore produces these for the Group's needs worldwide.
"The additional length capability enables the Harris Pye Group to offer finned tube supply services across the oil and gas industry as well as the power sector," says John Kinman. "Our long history and strong reputation has been in the marine industry, and we continue to be able to produce for any marine requirement. The installation of the serrator also opens the door for highly specialised stainless and exotic alloy finn/tube production for the petrochemical and other process industry"
The Square Finn Machine, also in Singapore, is now capable of producing power industry lengths up to 16m long (previously the longest that could be produced was 8m) for both single and double "H" tube. "This now enables us to serve the coal fired elements of the power industry. This is particularly relevant in the Australian market as even the small plants are still coal fired due to relatively cheap coal being available," says John Kinman.
About ‘Steel H'
Economisers are required to operate reliably in dirty and potentially corrosive environments. Since the introduction of steel ‘H' finned tubes in the 1950s, leading boilermakers, boiler repairers and end users have adopted the product as the ideal heating surface for the modern high pressure boiler Economiser, helping to ensure long availability of boiler operations, and minimising generating and maintenance costs, whatever fuel is being fired. The steel ‘H' principle sees pairs of parallel shaped fins resistance welded to the single pressure tube under very carefully controlled conditions.
The purpose-built welding machines ensure very precise indexing along the entire length of the tube to ensure accurate fin alignment and parallel attachments. ‘Steel H' finned tubes have around nine times more heating surface than a plain tube of the same length and diameter. This results in fewer tubes being required to achieve the same heat duty with a reduced number of welds as potential sources of failure. Up to 50% saving in the space required can be achieved.
The Harris Pye Group has ASME/National Board of Boiler & Press Vessel Inspectors approved manufacturing plants in Singapore, Dubai and Barry, South Wales and thus can use the ‘S', ‘U' and ‘R' stamps at each of these production facilities. The combined accreditation, in addition to their ISO 9001.2000, enables them to manufacture boiler parts and pressure vessels and to carry out metallic repairs and/or alterations at their workshops and at any field sites around the world.
