J-POWER And Origin Energy To Collaborate On Green Ammonia Export Project In Australia

Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Toshifumi Watanabe, President, “J-POWER”) announces that J-POWER has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Origin Energy Limited (“Origin”) for joint research on the development of a green ammonia export project in Australia (“the project”).

Origin is a leading integrated energy company in Australia with a 7,500 MW generation portfolio, including 1,200 MW owned and contracted renewables and storage. Origin is also an upstream operator of Australia Pacific LNG, which exports natural gas to Asia and supplies approximately 30 per cent of annual Australian east coast gas demand. Currently, Origin is exploring the development of carbon-neutral fuels, such as green hydrogen and green ammonia.

The purpose of the MOU is to jointly review and assess 1) the opportunity to collaborate on the development of the project (located in Bell Bay, Tasmania) and 2) the feasibility of supplying green ammonia produced from the project to J-POWER.

In the project, we intend to accelerate the practical application of green ammonia to cofiring by acquiring expertise of the green ammonia business and conducting studies to procure green ammonia that will be needed in the future at stable and inexpensive cost.

The project is one of the challenges included in our vision, J-POWER “BLUE MISSION 2050” (announced on February 26, 2021): to develop CO2-free hydrogen power generation. J-POWER will continue to fast-track the commitment to help create a carbon-neutral and hydrogen-based society by 2050.
