Clarifiers are utilized in a wide variety of applications for the removal of suspended solids from water by gravity settling (sedimentation). Clarifiers come in many shapes and sizes from simple rectangular to circular settling basins with sludge thickening rakes and sludge blanket level controls. Regardless of geometry, all clarifiers must provide effective area for settling. Removal efficiency (gpm/sq ft.) strongly depends on flow rate, type of solids, and solids concentration.
