Iberdrola Signs New Long-Term Electricity Supply Agreement In Washington

  • Avangrid and Puget Sound Energy have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the Big Horn I wind farm (199.5 MW), which will undergo a repowering process to boost output and extend its operating life.
  • The agreement strengthens Iberdrola’s commitment to upgrading and expanding generation assets in the United States, while supporting long-term energy solutions that help ensure grid stability and meet rising electricity demand.

Iberdrola has signed a new long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Puget Sound Energy in Washington State through its US subsidiary Avangrid.

The agreement strengthens the relationship between the two companies in the Pacific Northwest and secures the supply of clean energy from the Big Horn I wind farm in Klickitat County. With an installed capacity of 199.5 MW, the facility produces enough electricity to supply around 70,000 homes each year.

The deal further builds on the long-standing partnership between Avangrid and PSE, which have already collaborated on three other projects in the region — Golden Hills, Lund Hill and Klondike III — representing a combined capacity of more than 600 MW.

As part of the agreement, Avangrid will upgrade key components at Big Horn I, which has been operating since 2006, through a repowering programme designed to extend the wind farm’s lifespan, improve performance and secure operations for the next 20 years. The project is expected to create around 200 jobs during construction, with the upgraded facility scheduled to enter service in 2028.

The agreement reflects Iberdrola’s continued commitment to investing in and modernising energy infrastructure in the United States, while advancing long-term solutions that strengthen grid reliability and support growing electricity demand. The Group currently has more than 11,000 MW of installed capacity across nearly 100 facilities in 25 US states.
