Application Note

Application Note: Gammapilot M Monitors Highly Corrosive Materials

Application
The application was to measure the level of urea in a hydroliser. These are used in any process that has flue gas from the burning of coal, gas, or other materials, in power plants for example. They are used to inject ammonia into the exhaust stream which reduces the nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions in a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Since ammonia is a highly hazardous and toxic media it is very difficult to store and transport. A hydroliser uses a mixture of urea solids or gas and water to create ammonia gas on site so it does not have to be transported or stored. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is the most effective method of controlling nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) from combustion sources. It is a commercially proven flue gas treatment technology that has been demonstrated to remove over 90 percent of the NOx contained in combustion or process exhaust gas.

Elimination of NOx creates a healthier environment and meets stringent new EPA and EU reduction requirements. SCR technology is widely used on different types of combustion systems such as coal fired boilers, simple and combined cycle gas turbines, process boilers, hydrogen reformers, etc. Virtually any hot flue gas containing NOx can be treated effectively with the SCR process as a retrofit or as new equipment, and all of these applications are required to reduce NOx. This means there are always opportunities. There are also mass flow, pressure, and temperature measurements on these vessels.
