Framatome Secures Long-Term Contract To Supply Fuel To Leibstadt Nuclear Power Plant In Switzerland
Framatome has signed a contract with Kernkraftwerk Leibstadt AG (KKL) in Switzerland to supply ATRIUM 11 fuel assemblies to its Leibstadt Nuclear Power Plant over the period 2028-2035.
ATRIUM 11, Framatome’s most advanced fuel product for Boiling Water Reactors (BWR), is the leading commercialized technology with its 11×11 rod array. The design offers enhanced safety and significant fuel cycle savings. The unique geometry of ATRIUM 11 allows for increased energy extraction from the fuel while reducing the power demand on individual fuel rods. Framatome has been a trusted fuel supplier to KKL since 2008, supplying ATRIUM 11 since 2012.
“This contract underlines the solid relationship we have with our longstanding customer, KKL,” said Lionel Gaiffe, Senior Executive Vice President, Fuel Business Unit at Framatome. "We are proud to continue supporting Leibstadt by providing our safe, reliable and high-performance ATRIUM 11 fuel assemblies for the long term.”
“With this contract signed with Framatome, KKL confirms its commitment to the long-term operation of the nuclear power plant through solutions that are geared towards the safety, reliability and efficiency of the plant," says Bruno Zimmermann, Member of the Board of Directors.
With an output of 1,285 MW, KKL is the most powerful nuclear power plant in Switzerland, generating around one seventh of all Swiss electricity generation and providing electricity for two million households every day. In 2024, the Leibstadt plant generated 9,636 GWh of electricity, one of its highest outputs since its commissioning in 1984.
