The combustion of coal that requires emission control technologies is widely recognized as a significant environmental issue due to the potential release of hazardous and environmentally damaging pollutants. Globally, discharge water standards are becoming stricter for the waste streams from the emission control process, with an increasing number of metals and other parameters being regulated. Coal-fired power plants are subject to stringent regulations of coal combustion residuals and FGD wastewater from local authorities as well as effluent limitation guidelines (ELGs) from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
