Enel Green Power Chile Starts Construction Of The Domeyko Solar Park In The Antofagasta Region

  • The project, which will involve a total investment of 164 million US dollars, is due to generate around 589 GWh once fully operational
  • The construction will follow strict preventive measures in order to comply with the national guidelines regarding the ongoing pandemic

Enel Chile, through its renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power Chile, has started construction on its new 204 MW Domeyko photovoltaic (PV) park, located in the Antofagasta Region. The solar plant is due to be completed by July 2021, and will involve a total investment of 164 million US dollars.

“With the start of construction of Domeyko, we are able to further establish our renewable footprint in Chile, a Country gifted with a great wealth of energy sources,” said Salvatore Bernabei, CEO of Enel Green Power and Head of the Global Power Generation business line. “This effort underscores once more our tireless commitment to accelerate Chile's energy transition, paving the way towards a clean and efficient energy matrix while supporting the Country’s sustainability ambitions.”

The Domeyko Park will be spread across an area of approximately 700 hectares and will include the installation of 472,590 bifacial mono-crystalline PV modules, with cutting-edge technology that allows for greater efficiency in capturing solar radiation. Once operational, the plant will produce around 589 GWh, avoiding the emission of 439,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

During the construction of the facility, rigorous safety protocols are being implemented, in light of the ongoing pandemic and in line with the indications provided by health authorities, with the aim to ensure the necessary protection to the nearly 600 workers who will be involved in the construction. The measures include the mandatory and permanent use of personal protection equipment, and in addition crews are maintaining social distancing.

The Domeyko PV park is part of a portfolio of renewable projects that seeks to add 2 GW of installed capacity by 2022, half of which is already under construction.

Enel Green Power Chile is a subsidiary of Enel Chile and is a leader in Chile’s renewable energy market with a diversified portfolio comprising wind (564 MW), solar (492 MW), hydro (92 MW) and geothermal (41 MW) power.
