Emerson To Modernize Controls At 1,350-MW Istanbul Power Plant

Common automation platform for V94.2 gas turbines, steam turbines and balance-of-plant processes to enhance reliability, safety of plant serving one of the world’s fastest growing cities

Emerson has been selected to retrofit outdated controls at the Elektrik Uretim A.S. (EÜAS) Ambarli A combined-cycle power plant in Istanbul, Turkey, a growing city of 14 million people expected to reach nearly 17 million by 2030. Replacing the aging controls with a unified Ovation platform is expected to improve the reliability of the plant, which supplies electricity to western Istanbul. The contract was awarded by TEMSAN, the government-owned organization leading the project.

Ambarli A consists of three, 450-MW power blocks, each in a 2x2x1 configuration, with a total generating capacity of 1,350 MW. Under the contract, Emerson will replace existing controls with its Ovation system, which will control more than 20,000 I/O points in all. Ovation technology will directly control and provide overspeed protection for the plant’s six Siemens V94.2 gas turbines. The system will also control three Siemens dual-pressure condensing steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators and balance-of-plant equipment and processes.

Emerson will also install its Ovation SIS for SIL3 turbine protection and emergency shutdown systems and perform a complete digital electro-hydraulic control system rehabilitation for the third block’s gas turbines. Emerson automation specialists will provide engineering, design, installation, commissioning and startup services. The project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2018.

“We selected Emerson because they offered a single, proven platform for power plant automation, complemented by strong, experienced local support and service teams,” said Izzet Alagoz, general manager, TEMSAN Otomasyon.

“Since 2012, our Ovation technology has been controlling the 816-MW Ambarli B combined-cycle power plant. With the completion of Ambarli A, Emerson automation technologies will control the facility’s total production capacity of 2,166-MW, supplying Turkey’s largest city with 100 percent of its electricity requirements,” said Bob Yeager, president, Power & Water, Emerson Automation Solutions. “We’re delighted to be selected again to automate a plant that is so vital to keeping the lights on in Istanbul, one of the world’s fastest growing metropolitan areas.”
