Duraline's New 518 Connectors Have Locking Collets that Swivel

By Stephen Heiser

J.B. Nottingham & Company's Duraline division has developed a new series of high-power quick-disconnect connectors featuring a 360 locking collet. Duraline a leading manufacturer of electrical power distribution systems designed to withstand rough handling and severe weather conditions, is calling the new connectors the 518 Series High Power Single Pole Connectors. The 518 Series' non-specific locking-collet, permits the connector pairs to be mated and locked in any position.

The connectors can be manufactured to conform to IEEE-383 specifications for class 1E applications in nuclear-fueled power plants. The quick connection properties of the 518 Series connectors are well suited for crews who must work under limited allowable time exposures.

Once engaged, a locking-ring provides the connectors with a positive locking force of up to 300 pounds while still permitting free rotation, even with the most rigid cables. With the flexible collet design there are no cams to line up or keyways to align. In addition, there are no polarizing positions and no twisted cables to bind.

The 518 Series is designed and tested for AC and DC applications requiring currents from 50 amps to 1200 amps and voltages of up to 5KV. The 50 amp to 1200 amp specification is per plug and the plugs can be stacked to achieve higher ratings. All connectors are integrally molded to cable and include waterproof caps. In addition, they are waterproof to three feet of water. Also, mated pairs are fully watertight and are ideally suited for use in areas that are generally hosed down with water under pressure. To allow for phase identification, the connectors are available in a variety of colors.

The 518 Series connectors have applications for making electrical connections in power plants, generators, tunnels, railroad cars, oil rigs, refineries, aircraft carriers, street lights, underground high-voltage lines, or anywhere else a high power quick-disconnect connector is used. They are available in three different sizes and range in price from $100 to $1,200 per plug. The connectors are well suited to bad weather applications and temperature extremes. The outer insulation is rated to 105 degrees centigrade and they will tolerate UV light and radiation without decay. This latter feature makes them well-suited for use in nuclear power plants.
