As debris is trapped in the screen trays on the intake side of the traveling water screen, the pressure differential of the water on opposite sides of the unit increases. This differential head control system senses when the change in pressure exceeds a predetermined amount and automatically starts the affected unit or units so that the collected debris can be disposed of and the screen cleared. One differential control mechanism will accommodate any number of screens having a common effluent channel.
