Diffusion Coatings

Diffusion coatings are applied by pack cementation process. Metallic elements such as aluminum and/or chromium are diffused into the base material. Simplex and duplex diffusion coatings as well as aluminum coatings can be applied to cooling holes to reduce oxidation.

Overlay coatings

Overlay coatings are applied by Air Plasma Spray (APS), Low Pressure Plasma Spray (LPPS) or Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EB-PVD), aluminium-based compressor coatings.

  • APS
Mainly used for the application of zironium oxide thermal barrier coating to insulate components from the hot gasses thus reducing thermal stresses which results in a longer component life.

  • LPPS
These overlay coatings are mainly applied to components operating in the higher temperature zones.
By using a near-vacuum, argon atmosfere, plasma spraying of Nickel Chromium Aluminium Yttrium alloys on blades and vanes produces a homogeneous, well bonded, corrosion protective layer. These layers are state-of-the-art coatings in most recent turbine designs.

  • EB-PVD
Zirconium oxide, evaporated and deposited on components in vacuum by the aid of an electronbeam, produces a smooth, insulating layer on blades or vanes. This jet-engine technology has been upscaled for application on heavy industrial turbine components.

  • Aluminium based compressor coatings
Phosphate bonded aluminum can be applied by conventional spray and offers a galvanic protection on ferritic (stainless) steels as used for compressor components.
