Calpine completes buy of two New York facilities

Adding 74 MW to its Northeast portfolio, Calpine completed the acquisition of the remaining 50% interests in two, natural gas-fired energy facilities from an affiliate of Alexandria, Virginia-based Statoil Energy for $71 million.

Calpine has 540 net MW of generation in operation, 888 net MW under construction, and 1,585 net MW in announced development in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

This recent acquisition covers the 107 MW Kennedy International Airport power plant, which generates electricity and thermal energy, in Queens, New York. Under long-term contracts, the plant sells power to the New York and New Jersey Port Authority for use at the John F. Kennedy International Airport. Power sales also include Consolidated Edison of New York, the New York Power Authority and other utility customers.

The deal also includes the 40 MW Stony Brook cogeneration plant. Electricity and steam are sold to the State University of New York at Stony Brook under a long-term sales
agreement. Excess power is sold to Long Island Power Authority.

Based in San Jose, California, Calpine currently has a combined interest in about 17,800 MW of capacity in operation, under construction or announced development in 21 states across the country.
