Incorporating a static seal carrier and a smooth rotating shaft, the brush seal is comprised of wire filaments made of a cobalt-based alloy. The densely packed wire bristles welded between an Inconel backing plate and side plate are engineered to form a tight seal against a rotating component. The wire's flexibility enables automatic clearance adjustments as rotors expand and contract during operation. The seal does not require any permanent grooves. It can be used in land-based industrial gas turbine engines.
