Black & Veatch Designs Reliance Power's Samalkot Project - India's Largest Combined Cycle Power Plant

Reliance Power's Samalkot plant will support economic development

Reliance Power has selected Black & Veatch to design its INR 10,000-crore (approximately US$2B) Samalkot power plant. When completed, the facility will be the largest plant of its kind in India. It will produce the energy equivalent to power more than two million homes and support economic development across the region.

"The power sector has one of the most important roles in the development of a country," said Mohan Tahiliani, Vice President in Black & Veatch's global energy business. "The availability of reliable and affordable power is critical for India's sustainable economic development."

The facility will provide much needed additional generation to India's southern grid. Recent reports estimate that electric supply shortages in southern India resulted in a 30-35 percent production loss for the manufacturing industry in 2010.

Initial construction work has commenced and the new plant is planned to start generating power early in 2012. This aggressive schedule requires superior project execution for successful completion.

"This is a very fast-track undertaking. In awarding us this project, Reliance has demonstrated confidence in Black & Veatch's ability to meet complex challenges with quality output in an efficient and timely manner," Tahiliani added.
