AREVA Opens New $12 Million Pump And Motor Service Center In Virginia

Bethesda, Md., August 3, 2004 -- AREVA's joint subsidiary with Siemens, Framatome ANP Inc., today held a grand opening ceremony for a new 70,000-square-foot pump and motor* service center at its Lynchburg, Va., facility. State and local officials, nuclear power industry representatives, community leaders and news media were invited to tour the state-of-the-art facility.

The $12 million service center is part of Framatome ANP's overall $32 million expansion plan announced last year, which is expected to create about 300 new jobs at the company's three facilities in Lynchburg and Campbell County over a three-year period.
The service center is equipped with the latest technology for inspecting, repairing and refurbishing nuclear power plant primary and auxiliary pumps, motors and seals. The new facility will help Framatome ANP meet a growing demand for pump and motor services within the nuclear power industry, where utilities are upgrading aging plant equipment to increase efficiency, improve reliability, and extend the operating life of their plants.
Framatome ANP has manufactured more than 200 reactor coolant pumps and motors worldwide and completed more than 50 pump and motor projects in the U.S. In France, the company's SOMANU facility offers the expertise and capability to service more than 20 reactor coolant pump hydraulic systems and motors annually. This combined experience enabled AREVA to design a world-class facility that can handle any manufacturer's equipment. The group's refurbished pumps and motors often will achieve better performance and higher efficiency than the original equipment.

* Large pumps and motors are used extensively throughout nuclear power plants to circulate high volumes of water to transfer heat from the reactor vessel and operate various auxiliary systems. They play a key role in nuclear power plant safety and availability. The largest pump and motor assemblies together can weigh up to 100 tons and can be more than 25 feet in height.
