AIR PRODUCTS ANNOUNCES PLANS TO BUILD COGENERATION FACILITY

                      In Calvert City, Kentucky

ALLENTOWN, Pa., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD) announced today its plans to build a cogeneration plant adjacent to the company's chemicals manufacturing facility located in Marshall County at 412 North Main Street, Calvert City, Kentucky. Air Products' Gases and Equipment Group will build the cogeneration plant, which will utilize modern gas turbine and heat recovery technologies to efficiently produce approximately 26 megawatts of electricity and up to 500,000 pounds per hour of steam. The new facility expects to provide steam and electricity to Air Products' existing Calvert City chemicals manufacturing plant, power to the Tennessee Valley Authority, and also will be capable of providing steam and power to other potential customers in the Calvert City area.

The natural gas cogeneration unit, scheduled to be operational in the spring of 2000, will provide environmental benefits through reduced air emissions from Air Products' operations in the Calvert City area, as well as energy and cost advantages to Air Products and other potential customers. The environmental, energy and cost advantages of the cogeneration project fit with the company's strategy of using its energy development experience and resources to lower the utility costs of its gases, chemicals, and electronics operations as well as the utility costs of its customers.

Air Products' Gases and Equipment Group has built and operates a number of cogeneration facilities at U.S. locations, including New Orleans, La., Ebensburg, Pa., Stockton, Calif., and Orlando, Fla. In addition, the company operates cogeneration facilities in Bangkok, Thailand and Rotterdam, Holland.
