ABB Wins Major I&C and Electrical Contracts for Malaysia's Power Plant Combined Cycle Conversion Project on Penang Island
ABB announced today that it has been awarded contracts for Malaysia's Tenaga Nasional Berhad Gelugor combined cycle power plant. The contracts are placed by the project's EPC contractor, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Tokyo). This project is significant, as Kawasaki has demonstrated its full confidence in ABB by placing not only the order for control and instrumentation, but also for the electrical package as well, totalling over US$4 million.
The project is a result of Tenaga National Berhad's intention to convert the two 110MW open cycle gas turbine plants at the Gelugor Power Station, Pulau Pinang (or Penang Island), into a single combined cycle power plant to meet the increasing electricity demand on the island state. The existing plant consists of two Frame 9171 E gas turbines capable of dual fuel firing. The combined cycle block will consist of two gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and one 105MW-steam turbine-generator arranged in a 2-2-1 configuration. The commissioning of this project is scheduled to begin by the fourth quarter of 2001.
Under the terms of the contract, ABB is responsible for the project management, engineering, testing, commissioning, and installation support of the following:
- Control system
- Mimic panel for switchgear
- Generator transformers
- Unit/station transformers
- 6.6kV auxiliary transformers
- 6.6kV switchgear
- 415V switchgear (Motor Control Center)
- Isolated Phase Busduct (IPB)
- Generator Circuit Breakers (GCB)
- DC/ uninterruptible power supply system protection relay panel
