Franklin, MA — Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a leader in serving science, announced recently the shipment of its 100th Thermo Scientific Mercury Freedom System, a complete, integrated solution for mercury emissions monitoring mandated for coal-fired power plants under the Clean Air Mercury Rule.

"Shipment of our 100th Thermo Scientific Mercury Freedom System is not only a big milestone for us but for the industry at large," said Michael Nemergut, marketing director for Thermo Fisher Scientific's Air Quality Instruments business. "It means that our technology has reached a critical mass in the marketplace where utilities facing the CAMR compliance deadline should seriously consider investing in this proven solution for their mercury monitoring needs. The shipment of the 100th Mercury Freedom System is a clear indicator of a growing market trend, as we are planning many more shipments in the months ahead."

The 100th Thermo Scientific system was delivered to The Shaw Group Inc., a diversified company with engineering, design, construction, and maintenance support services including capabilities to install, integrate and certify mercury emissions monitoring systems for CAMR compliance. The Shaw Group has been collaborating with Thermo Fisher Scientific since 2006 in the installation of Mercury Freedom Systems for Shaw's large-scale utility customers in the coal-fired power industry.

The 100th shipment milestone was commemorated recently at the Thermo Fisher Scientific facility in Franklin, Mass., with an employee celebration. At the event, the first ‘Mercury Customer Award' was presented to David L. Evans, vice president and operations director at Shaw's National Air Measurements Group based in Knoxville, Tenn. "This award symbolizes a real high point for both Shaw and Thermo Fisher Scientific," noted Mr. Evans. "Our partnership is based on strong mutual confidence and support and has resulted in a solid solution for the industry. Shaw's high regard for the Thermo team is certainly evidenced by our past and future commitment to the Mercury Freedom product."

The Thermo Scientific Mercury System has a simplicity of design that results in maximum ease of use and maintenance, lower installation and operating costs, high reliability, and lower space requirements. The system's simplicity is evidenced by the seamless integration of four basic components: a probe incorporating an innovative dry converter and HgCl2 generator in the stack; a probe controller, mercury analyzer and elemental calibrator, all fitting into a standard EIA rack in the shelter.
