Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces TEOM Series 4200 Carbon In Ash Monitor For Maximized Combustion Efficiency And Fly Ash Sales

Frankline, MA — Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, announces the TEOM Series 4200 Carbon – In - Ash Monitor (CIAM) to maximize combustion efficiency and fly ash sales from coal-fired power plants. The Thermo Scientific TEOM Series 4200 CIAM provides feedback to plant operators in near real time with an automatic, unattended measurement of unburned carbon in fly ash. The Thermo Fisher Scientific method offers substantial advantages over manual sampling and analysis with its quick turnaround time and consistent measurement accuracy (+0.5 % w/w).

"Besides improving combustion efficiency for savings on coal consumption, the Series 4200 system enables plant operators to reduce the carbon content of fly ash through the adjustment of boiler controls," said Michael Nemergut, marketing director for Thermo Fisher Scientific's Air Quality Instruments business. "Currently some coal-powered plants make large expenditures for fly ash disposal. By using the Series 4200 monitor to reduce fly ash carbon concentration, plant operators can realize a substantial increase in revenue fly ash sales and a significant reduction in ash disposal costs. Not surprisingly, payback on the 4200 is typically a matter of months."

The Thermo Scientific Series 4200 CIAM carries out this automatic measurement of fly ash carbon approximately every 12 minutes using a test patterned after the ASTM C311 loss-on-ignition (LOI) and other thermal oxidation methods performed in plant laboratories. The test method includes sampling fly ash from the flue isokinetically, transporting it to a filter for weighing, heating the sample in a high temperature furnace to 800°C for measuring the amount of carbon dioxide produced, and calculating the percentage of residue carbon in the sample. The results are reported to plant personnel and data management systems before recycling to the start of another test.
