Low Pressure Plasma Coatings (LPPS), also known as Vacuum Plasma Spraying (VPS), is the process of applying plasma spray coatings in a low pressure argon atmosphere chamber. These coatings are well suited for bond coats on advanced thermal barrier coatings and thick, oxidation resistant, clearance control coatings for high-pressure turbine seals. They include an almost complete absence of pores or oxide inclusions and an applicable thickness of up to 0.35 mm.

Elcoat 2086 is a nickel base LPPS overlay coating of the MCrAIY type. Elcoat 2185 is a cobalt base MCrAIY composition. Next to nickel and/or cobalt, both coating compositions have high percentages of chromium and aluminum. The element yttrium is generally known for its beneficial effect on the oxidation resistance.
