Norit Introduces New Activated Carbon For Mercury Removal DARCO Hg-LH EXTRA

Improved Mercury-Removal Performance In Challenging Flue Gas Applications Using Up To 20% Less Activated Carbon.

MARSHALL, Texas (BUSINESS WIRE) - Norit today introduced DARCO® Hg-LH EXTRA1, a new activated carbon that advances mercury removal performance in challenging flue gas applications while using less activated carbon. DARCO® Hg-LH EXTRA is the newest product in Norit's DARCO Hg family, and complements Norit's DARCO Hg-LH which is the industry standard for mercury control technology for coal-fired utilities.

New regulations to limit mercury emissions from coal-fired utilities are being enacted in the United States, Canada and other countries around the globe. The proposed regulations for US coal-fired utilities are expected to reduce mercury emissions into the environment by 91 percent. Also, achieving high mercury removal rates in the presence of SO3 is a growing challenge as utilities address their multi-component emissions strategy. Norit activated carbon can help enable the utility industry to cost-effectively meet new regulations without disrupting operations.

With almost 100 years of experience in activated carbon product innovation, Norit is leading the industry in developing new products that are tailored to meet customers' needs. DARCO Hg-LH EXTRA is the latest product to result from Norit's ongoing R&D efforts. Norit's engineers and scientists worked to create a new premium product to complement DARCO Hg-LH, and which would offer improved mercury removal performance in challenging applications.

Sorbent injection trials at several separate coal-fired power plants showed DARCO Hg-LH EXTRA achieved 90 percent mercury removal from flue gas at low injection rates. In addition, DARCO Hg-LH EXTRA has achieved high mercury removal rates in the presence of SO3 demonstrating 90 percent mercury removal from flue gas in the presence of 6.5 ppm SO3 at moderate injection rates.

"At Norit, we are always working on new and innovative products for the activated carbon marketplace," said Dr. Brian Tucker, Research Director of Norit Americas. "With DARCO Hg-LH EXTRA, we have developed a new revolutionary process that improves the oxidative capability of our sorbents, resulting in improved mercury adsorption capacity and kinetics. The lab results were outstanding, and recent full-scale tests at several coal-fired utilities confirm the results we saw in our labs. We are pleased to introduce this new innovative mercury removal product to the marketplace." said Dr. Tucker.
