Johnson Matthey Introduces New Modulex Catalytic Converters And Converter-Silencers

Latest generation of pioneering converter design enables customers to meet RICE NESHAP regulation

New from Johnson Matthey, the global leader in stationary emissions control technology, is its latest generation of pioneering catalytic converters—Modulex 3-way and 2-way converters and converter-silencers that reduce exhaust emissions and/or noise from any size stationary gas or diesel engine. The converter-silencers are capable of critical or hospital grade noise reduction.

Customers have depended on Johnson Matthey’s cost-effective converter designs for decades to serve multiple new or retrofit applications such as gas compression, power generation, water and waste water pumping, standby power, oil and gas production.

“Johnson Matthey’s Modulex converters incorporate advanced catalyst technology and a new converter design to ensure maximum catalyst performance and simple maintenance. The new converter design offers easy access to the catalyst element for cleaning, replacement or to add more catalyst,” said Ben Tatum, Engineering Manager for Johnson Matthey Stationary Emissions Control (SEC) Business.

Modulex converters can convert as much as 99% of HAPs, CO, NOx, HC and VOC emissions from gas engines and as much as 99% of HAPs, CO and HC from diesel engines, as well as reduce noise. The unique design and construction of the catalyst element also reduces backpressure, which means fuel savings and longer catalyst life.

Johnson Matthey offers four different single or multi-element Modulex converters:

  • Modulex B Catalytic Converter (for 250-2,000 HP IC engines)
  • Modulex C Catalytic Converter (for 50-500 HP IC engines)
  • Modulex QB Converter-Silencer (for 250-2,000 HP IC engines)
  • Modulex QC Converter-Silencer (for 50-500 HP IC engines)

At the heart of the Modulex converter is the catalyst element that is manufactured using Johnson Matthey’s proprietary coating technology assuring uniform dispersion of the Platinum Group Metals (PGM). The metal monoliths supporting the PGM are brazed, thin-walled stainless steel honeycomb. They are nearly impervious to damage from mechanical or thermal shock and metallurgic erosion.
