Exelon Generation Breaks Ground On New 120 Megawatt Natural Gas Power Plant Expansion

New generating unit builds on Exelon’s commitment to providing clean and reliable energy to Maryland

Aberdeen, MD - Exelon Generation leaders joined key state and county government representatives yesterday to celebrate the start of construction on the new 120 megawatt(MW) natural gas power generating unit.

Approximately 70 key stakeholders, including state and Harford County officials, joined members of the Exelon Generation project team for the groundbreaking ceremony held at the Perryman facility adjacent to the current operating Perryman 51 unit. The project is expected to be complete and available for commercial operation by June 2015.

“During the peak of construction, nearly 100 jobs will be created at the project, with a local economic impact of more than $11 million,” Exelon Power President Ron DeGregorio said Monday at the groundbreaking. “The project is estimated to pay an average of $1.3 million per year in property tax to Harford County, over the first 20 years of operation and that is more than $25 million to local schools and county services.”

Exelon Power has contracted with Pratt & Whitney Power Systems for a simple-cycle generation unit with 120 MW gas turbine generator package, which consists of two simple cycle, aero-derivative combustion turbines of capacity. “We are building Maryland’s next generation of power,” said DeGregorio.

Located near Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County, Perryman Station currently has five units in services with a total capacity of 345 MW. Four of the plant’s units are oil fired combustion turbines and the fifth unit is fueled by natural gas. When the two new units begin commercial operation in June 2015, the additional 120 MW will increase the facility’s generation output to 465 MW.

The new Perryman units will help Maryland meet its long-term energy needs with efficient, clean and affordable energy and is part of a commitment Exelon made to the state during the merger with Constellation Energy Group.
