Emerson To Provide Controls For New Supercritical Coal-Fired Plant In Indonesia

Ovation technology will unify boiler and turbine controls for improved plant stability, responsiveness and thermal efficiencies; tighter control of plant operations; and a clearer view of plant and turbine parameters

Emerson Process Management will install its Ovation expert control system at a new 660-MW, supercritical power plant in Adipala, Indonesia, near the south shore of Cilacap in the Jawa Tengah Province. The Emerson technology will help the plant operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.

Expected to be commissioned in February 2013, this is the first supercritical plant to be built by China National Technical Import and Export Corporation.

"This project marks our first collaboration with Emerson," said Liu Zhu, I&C Specialist, China National Technical Import and Export Corp., noting that the new plant will help support economic development in the region. "We based our decision on Emerson's significant experience automating supercritical units, their proven technology and their global resources."

Ovation technology will monitor and control the plant's Babcock & Wilcox Beijing Co. Ltd. boiler and Shanghai Electric Corp. turbine. Unifying boiler and turbine controls provides improved plant stability, responsiveness and thermal efficiencies; tighter overall control of plant operations; and a clearer view of key plant and turbine parameters.

The Ovation system, which will manage approximately 11,000 I/O points, will also perform data acquisition and manage the plant's modulating control system, sequence control system, furnace safety supervisory system, feedwater turbine control system and electrical control system, as well as the supervisory and plant management system. Emerson will supply a total of 19 Ovation controllers, nine workstations and its EDS enterprise visualization technology.

"Our Ovation technology, which was built specifically for power generation, will help ensure optimum reliability and availability of the new Adipala plant," said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson Process Management's Power & Water Solutions. "We are pleased to have been selected for this project, which marks the beginning of what we hope will be a long and mutually beneficial relationship."
