ABB Expands Charlotte Energy Hub With New High Voltage Cable Factory
You are invited to celebrate the official grand opening of ABB’s high-voltage cable manufacturing facility in Huntersville, NC on Wednesday, September 19. ABB is the newest international manufacturer to join the growing Charlotte Energy Hub. As the power infrastructure of the United States evolves, ABB continues to invest in American energy resources.
The new plant will supply high-voltage and extra high-voltage transmission cables, for both AC and DC applications, to carry massive amounts of electric power and renewable energy underground as part of the nation’s new Smart Grid. New AC and DC underground transmission lines will strengthen the North America energy infrastructure and enable power from remote renewable resources, like wind and solar, to reach homes and businesses. ABB has invested approximately $90M in the new operation, which will employ around 135 people when it opens.
ABB already has a substantial presence in North Carolina, employing more than 1,600 people in eight locations (Cary, Raleigh, Pinetops, Kings Mountain, Shelby, Weaverville, Marion and now Huntersville). ABB’s North American corporate headquarters are based in Cary, and ABB’s Power Products/Power Systems divisional headquarters are located on the Centennial Campus of NC State University in Raleigh. This is also the site of ABB’s new “Smart Grid Center of Excellence,” a futuristic testing lab and demo center for utilities to test new equipment on a live smart grid-enabled network.
