Fatigue, fracture mechanics workshop set

January 8, 2001

Structural Integrity Associates, Inc. Associates, Inc. (SI), in collaboration with the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD), plans to sponsor a two-day course—Metal Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics in the Nuclear Power Industry—Feb. 8-9, in Denver, CO.

UCD plans to give continuing education units (CEUs) for completion of this course.

Fatigue of metal components proves to be one of the key contributors, if not the prime contributor, to the degradation of aging plant components. Fracture mechanics provides a tool to determine the fitness for continued operation of piping or components that contain flaws.

Designers and systems engineers can apply the knowledge gained from this course to in-house design, replacement, or re-evaluation decisions of plant components. Participants are encouraged to bring any fatigue or fracture mechanics problems to the course. The instructors plan to use them as sample problems, with the goal of sending workshop participants home with cost-effective solutions.
