Emerson Awarded Contract To Digitally Automate New Coal-Fired Power Plant In Vietnam
PlantWeb® digital plant architecture with Ovation® expert control system selected for first phase of Haiphong Power Plant; new units will help meet expected 15 percent annual growth in electricity demand in North Vietnam
Pittsburgh Emerson Process Management announced it has received a contract to install its PlantWeb digital plant architecture with the Ovation® expert control system in Units 1 and 2 of the new Vietnam Haiphong Power Plant. Dongfang Electric Corp., the project's EPC contractor, selected Emerson to automate the two 300-MW units, which comprise the first phase of the Haiphong project. Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry center will coordinate and supervise the project.
The plant, owned by Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Co., is located in the Thuy Nguyen District, Haiphong Province. When all four 300-MW coal-fired units are operational, the plant will be the largest coal-fired power generation facility in Vietnam, and will play a key role in meeting the increasing demand for power in North Vietnam, estimated to be growing at 15 percent annually primarily due to burgeoning economic development in the region. Unit 1 is slated begin commercial operation June 2008, Unit 2 is expected to go into service six months later.
"The Haiphong Power Plant is instrumental to meeting North Vietnam's growing demand for electricity," said, Ren Wei Min, project manager, Dongfang Electric Group. "We're confident that Emerson's PlantWeb solution will contribute to the safe, reliable and efficient operation of these new units."
For Haiphong, Emerson's comprehensive PlantWeb solution includes deployment of the Ovation control system for data acquisition, as well as for monitoring and control of the sequence control system, furnace safeguard supervisory system, and electrical control system for all major plant components, including the boiler, turbine, flue gas desulphurization system and balance of plant processes. In all, the Ovation solution, which will include the installation of a total of 36 Ovation redundant controllers and 26 workstations, will manage more than 24,000 I/O points.
In addition, Emerson will provide AMS™ Suite: Intelligent Device Manager asset management software for each unit, which will provide operators with data from HART intelligent field devices located throughout the plant. For new plant construction, AMS Device Manager streamlines device configuration and commissioning, thereby contributing to more efficient plant startup. AMS Device Manager also provides online access to instrument and valve diagnostics and automatic documentation of all field device maintenance information – all contributing to ongoing efficiency of plant operations and maintenance activities.
"Haiphong units 1 and 2 mark the beginning of what we hope will be a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Dongfang Electric Group," said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson's Power & Water Solutions division. "We're pleased that we were able to offer the leading-edge automation and control technologies they required, and are honored to be chosen for this project."
