ABB receives contract from Statkraft SF, Norway for control of total hydro power generation.

Statkraft SF, Norway has awarded a contract to ABB concerning a supervisory control system for all of Statkrafts hydro power generation. The contract value is 2.7 MUSD.

Statkraft is the largest power producer in Norway. It is a government owned company having responsibility for major generation plants, inclusive of water dams in Norway. The company acts as supplier on the deregulated Nordic electricity market and owns 30 % of the installed generation capacity in Norway. Statkraft is also active on the European market.

"In a competive and de-regulated power market, Statkraft needs efficient and flexible control and decision support systems. The main objectives for this project are:

  • Cost-effective Operation and Supervisory Control of Statkraft's production system, provided by efficient SCADA-functionality and multi-area Automatic Generation Control
  • Improved Hydro Scheduling tools, to facilitate more optimal operation of our generation plants
  • Flexibility and scalability, allowing for easy integration of new production capacity as well as internal re-allocation of operational responsibilities. This new control system will be a fundamental part of our new infrastructure, allowing us to fulfill our goals, says Lars Holten, Vice President Production and Tron Engebrethsen, Senior Vice President Production "

The ABB delivery will comprise four control centers located in each of the regions, all over Norway. Additionally, one operator station will be available in the overall power center at Statkraft headquarter. The delivery includes in total 18 operators consoles. The consoles are configured in such a way that a total flexibility in Statkraft´s operations is facilitated. Further, the delivery includes servers/computers that are redundant for highest operational availability, for both real-time and data warehousing. The computers will, for security reasons, be placed in different locations. The delivery also includes data communication with the 55 power plants and interfaces to Statkraft´s planning systems.

The new control system will be taken into full operation by August 2004.

"Demands for generation management is rapidly evolving and new needs for improved power systems control constantly arise. An example in the Statkraft delivery is the automatic generation control with dynamic multiple areas. Success factor for ABB is our competence. For winning of this contract we offer the latest in Industrial IT for power generation", says Kjell Gustafsson, Manager of ABB Utility Automation.
